Why You May Likely Know More Than The “AI Experts.”

This email is longer than usual as there is a lot to unpack.

Let’s start. I want you to be well informed. Stay with me.

Sometimes it’s wise to ignore the leading minds and experts when It comes to AI.

The Wright Brothers achieved first “flight” because they did what all the experts at that time were doing.

I have never worked at Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple or any other big tech company. I only carried out an AI deep dive about AI only when Open AI released ChatGPT on 30th November 2022.

Experts do not have a monopoly on the Truth. In fact, as David Epstein shares in his book, Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World, (great read by the way) experts are worse at predicting the future in their area of expertise than laymen.

Non-experts often see the big picture because they are not as close to the field. They can take a more objective view of the situation and make more accurate predictions.

Don’t fall into the trap of only listening to experts.

The reason I can address the most difficult problems facing humanity is not because of my lack of knowledge and expertise in Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Neural Networks, or any of the other tools that are lumped under the Artificial Intelligence umbrella.

But because I can collate and combine key concepts from Vedic literature, spiritual intelligence, philosophy, wisdom, psychology, sociology, history, health, business and finance.

The people who make the best predictions in what Epstein calls “wicked environments” are the ones with the widest range of experiences.

“Wicked environments” are environments where the rules are not fixed. Business, medicine, politics, and AI are wicked environments.

Chess, golf, and piano are kind environments since the rules are always the same.

AI is very different. It’s rules are changing daily.

The people who will solve the problems in AI will need to be mass generalists with a wide range of knowledges and experiences.

You shouldn’t necessarily rely on experts to solve the world’s toughest problems. These problems can be solved by you and me.

By people who passionately care for their loved ones, their friends, and all the people in the world.

I have a wide range of experiences that many AI experts, tech leaders, and professors may not possess.

This doesn’t make me better or smarter than what they are.

It just gives me the ability to look at the same problems from a very different viewpoint.

In fact, your own wide range of experiences may put you in a position to understand and help protect humanity better than the limited views of AI experts.

Now let’s talk about some AI definitions.

Scientists, philosophers, engineers, and futurists all use the same words, but they mean very different things depending on who is using them.

Clear definitions will stand you in good stead as we go deeper down the rabbit hole.

Unfortunately, computer scientists and others regularly use words like consciousness, sentience, free will, and singularity without clear, useful definitions.

Let’s start with the basics.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, decision-making, and understanding language.

AI systems are designed to mimic certain aspects of human intelligence, but they don’t have the same kind of self-awareness or consciousness that humans have. AI is a broad field that includes things like chatbots, self-driving cars, facial recognition, and even games like chess or Go.

What are Large Language Models? (LLM)

A Large Language Model (LLM) is a type of artificial intelligence system that is trained on a massive amount of text data from the internet. This allows the LLM to understand and generate human-like text on a wide range of topics.

ChatGPT is the most popular Large Language Model, but there are many others too such as Gemini and Claude, LLMs are really good at understanding and generating text.

What is Chat GPT?

ChatGPT is a computer program developed by OpenAI that can understand and respond to human language in a very natural way. It’s like having a smart assistant that you can chat with and ask questions about all kinds of topics.

ChatGPT can help you with writing tasks, answering questions, solving math problems, and even coding! However, it’s not always accurate so you’ll want to fact-check the responses with additional research.

Let’s go deeper.

What is Free will?

Free will is one of those things that makes us uniquely human. Free Will is the capacity of the human soul to choose and act upon various alternatives, including both natural and moral decisions. It is the power to choose what is good or evil, according to reason and moral law. This is sometimes called moral reasoning.

Hindus (or followers of Sanatana Dharma) believe they should use their free will to act in the best possible way in order to receive good karma. All Hindus are encouraged to follow the four aims of life which are Dharma, (duty, purpose and upholding what is righteous) Artha (money and wealth) Kama (relationships, love and leisure) and Moksha (liberation).

These will be discussed fully for modern practical living in future emails.

But Free will is not just binary. It can be influenced and manipulated by things such as genetics, upbringing, life experience, culture, restfulness, alertness, health, mood, and worldviews.

What is Conscience?

Our conscience tells us what’s right and wrong, however it must be rightly formed. To have a conscience you must have the free will to then choose right or wrong. It can be argued that for this reason, animals don’t have a conscience.
